With voters expressing ever-increasing anger at Washington politicians, it’s logical to conclude that Sen. Arlen Specter, a five-term senator who switched parties to become a Democrat out of political expediency, might encounter serious trouble.

A new poll from Franklin and Marshall College confirms Specter’s precarious situation. He trails Republican Pat Toomey by 14 points, 45 percent to 31 percent. Only 34 percent of Pennsylvanians gave Specter favorable job marks, with 58 percent saying he was doing a “fair” or “poor” job as senator.

Just 29 percent of Pennsylvanians said Specter deserves reelection, with 60 percent responding that it’s time for a change.

Specter still holds an advantage in the Democratic primary but polls at only 30 percent against his lesser-known challenger, Rep. Joe Sestak, who tallies 13 percent of the vote.
